Education Manager
Richmond Shakespeare
Part-Time, $25 Hourly | Richmond, Virginia
Richmond Shakespeare seeks an enthusiastic, organized, and collaborative part-time Education Manager to coordinate and lead the company’s education programs throughout the year.
The Education Manager will oversee three cornerstone programs—Student Matinees, Bardathon, and Festival Young Company—serving as Richmond Shakespeare’s primary liaison with students, teachers, schools, teaching artists, and families.
This is a hands-on position combining arts administration, teaching artistry, curriculum development, and program coordination. The ideal candidate is passionate about Shakespeare and theatre education and enjoys introducing young people to classical theatre through both performance and participation.
Student Matinee Program
The Education Manager will coordinate student matinees for Richmond Shakespeare’s production of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in October 2026 and future student matinee productions.
Responsibilities include:
Recruit and register participating schools and manage school reservations.
Communicate directly with teachers and school administrators regarding reservations, schedules, transportation, accessibility, and performance logistics.
Maintain accurate school, student, and attendance information.
Develop and distribute a production study guide for teachers and students, including background information, themes, discussion questions, classroom activities, and resources.
Welcome and coordinate school groups upon arrival at the theatre.
Introduce performances as needed.
Lead post-performance talkbacks with students and members of the cast and creative team.
Gather feedback from participating teachers and students.
Help cultivate ongoing relationships with schools throughout the region.
The Education Manager must be available for 12:00 PM student matinee performances Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during the October 1–29, 2026 performance period.
Bardathon
The Education Manager will oversee Richmond Shakespeare’s annual Bardathon, a Shakespeare performance program culminating in a spring performance at the Dominion Energy Center.
Responsibilities include:
Recruit and register participating schools.
Serve as the primary point of contact for teachers throughout the program.
Work with Richmond Shakespeare’s artistic team to select the Shakespeare play or material used for the program.
Cut and prepare an age-appropriate performance script from the selected Shakespeare play for participating students.
Develop supporting rehearsal and educational materials.
Visit participating schools and lead Shakespeare performance workshops with students.
Coach students in Shakespearean text, character, storytelling, and performance.
Coordinate participating schools and teachers as the culminating event approaches.
Plan and lead the combined Bardathon rehearsal at the Dominion Energy Center.
Lead and coordinate the culminating Bardathon performance in the spring.
Work with Richmond Shakespeare staff and venue personnel on scheduling and event logistics.
Festival Young Company
The Education Manager will coordinate Richmond Shakespeare’s Festival Young Company, our summer Shakespeare training program for young artists, held in June.
Responsibilities include:
Assist with student recruitment, registration, and family communication.
Coordinate the FYC schedule, teaching artists, classes, and program logistics.
Help develop curriculum centered on Shakespeare performance and classical theatre.
Teach and/or facilitate classes and workshops as appropriate.
Serve as the primary point of contact for participating students and families.
Coordinate student rehearsals and performances.
Help create an inclusive, supportive, and challenging environment in which young artists can develop their skills.
Work with Richmond Shakespeare’s artistic and production teams to connect FYC students with the professional summer festival.
Additional Responsibilities
The Education Manager will also help Richmond Shakespeare strengthen its overall education program by developing relationships with schools and community partners, maintaining education-program records, tracking participation and outcomes, assisting with grant reporting information, and identifying opportunities to expand student access to Richmond Shakespeare programming.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have experience in theatre education, teaching artistry, K–12 education, directing, Shakespeare performance, arts administration, or youth programming.
Strong candidates should possess:
Experience working with middle and/or high school students.
Knowledge of Shakespeare and enthusiasm for making classical texts accessible to young people.
Strong teaching and group-facilitation skills.
Comfort leading workshops, rehearsals, and public discussions.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational and scheduling abilities.
Ability to communicate professionally with teachers, administrators, students, parents, artists, and community partners.
Experience adapting or cutting Shakespearean texts for performance is preferred.
Ability to work independently while collaborating with Richmond Shakespeare’s artistic and administrative staff.
Schedule & Compensation
This is a part-time, hourly position, with hours varying throughout the season based on program needs. Administrative and planning hours can be flexible, with required in-person availability for school workshops, student matinees, rehearsals, performances, and summer programming.
Key program periods include:
Fall 2026: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein Student Matinees
Winter 2026–Spring 2027: Bardathon school registration, workshops, rehearsals, and culminating performance
Spring - Summer 2027: Festival Young Company
Compensation: $25/hour
